Homer City, PA

Lafayette F. Sutter was born in 1860 in PA to German parents. Prior to his own place, he was in a lumber business for many years, then hardware, and then a carriage business. In 1903, he purchased interest in Indiana (PA) Hardware company. While manager at Indiana Hardware Co., they bought out and merged with A.T. Taylor & Son. Sold his interest in 1915 and with son, Max C., organized Sutter Hardware Co. of Homer City. In 1918, another son, Maize, joined the firm. Lafayette had his hands in many local businesses including organizing Sutter-Rinn Coal Co of Plumville in 1920 and being the manager of Indiana Brewing Co. He died in 1937. The business stayed in the same place at 102 Main St, with some additional space built on, the whole time it was in business. It was always managed by family, including Robert Sutton, grandson to Lafayette. In 1972 it was sold to Joseph Pellegrene for plans to auction all contents before reselling the building to Joseph Sipas for expansion of the Sipos Furniture Store.
