Alexander T. Taylor (1848-1920) started off by working at the tin shop of James Turner, who had opened his shop in 1860. AT Taylor bought Turner’s shop in 1873 and began a partnership with Edward Row to form Row & Taylor. AT bought out Row in 1880. William W., AT’s son, teamed up with his father in 1904 to run the business. They were bought out in 1907 and merged with the Indiana Hardware (managed by L.F. Sutter). AT oversaw the tin shop, plumbing, and roofing. Sutter managed stoves and hardware. In 1909 AT Taylor and his son retired from Indiana Hardware and opened a stove and light hardware business at No. 21 N 6th St. called A.T. Taylor & Son. They moved to 732 Philadelphia St. in 1916 with a focus on plumbing, stoves, and sheetmetal. Stopped selling stoves around 1930. Added a gift shop in 1942. Shifted store focus to furnace installation, sheet metal work, along with the gift shop by the 1950’s; by the later 50’s mostly just the gift shop. It was still run by the son William at the same location when he died in 1964 at age 87. His widow sold the store to a gal who had worked there for many years. She and her sister renamed the store Taylor’s Gift Shop. It carried china, silverware, gifts, housewares, and more; specialized in bridal registry services. The Taylor name finally ended in 2008 when the sisters sold the store.
